The latest issue of Ogonek magazine features the Top 10 of the foreigners who came to Russia and not just served their new country but became the national symbols. Our team’s guard J R Holden found its place in between historical personalities.

Ogonek writes: “American player Jon Robert Holden is one of the most famous naturalized sportsmen in Russia. He plays for CSKA from 2002, he got Russian citizenship in 2003, still keeping his American passport. He made his debut for basketball Russian National Team becoming first black player in its history. Holden defended Russian colors during 2005 and 2007 Eurobaskets, 2008 Olympics. He scored the winning basket in 2007 European Championship final game versus Spain, making Russia the champion.”

Top 10 of Russians with foreign roots includes also Rurik, Theophanes the Greek, Simeon Bekbulatovich, Vitus Bering, Abram Gannibal, Catherine II, Osip Deribas, Ramón Mercader and Arnold Lokshin.
